Beer Culture in Pančevo

historical and social context

This year marks three centuries since beer production began in Pančevo. After experiencing numerous ups and downs, the continuity of this brewing tradition was interrupted in 2008 when the brewery closed its doors to “achieve competitiveness and financial justification.” As a result, the streets of Pančevo lost the distinctive aroma of cooked malt, and beer enthusiasts were deprived of their beloved traditional homemade drink.

However, the defenders of this unique heritage soon rose to the occasion and began producing craft beer in their small workshops. The glorious tradition of the oldest brewing town in the region continued thanks to these dedicated craft producers. One such producer operates on the site of the oldest brewery in the area, known as Weifert’s or the National Brewery. The complex of the National Brewery in Pančevo is recognized as a cultural property of great importance to the Republic of Serbia.

Unfortunately, much of the brewery complex is in a state of neglect due to inappropriate use, lack of maintenance, and the aftermath of fires. Today, it stands as a diminished reflection of Pančevo’s rich industrial past.
