Banat narrow-gauge railway

The area of today’s Vojvodina, and above all Banat, had a very dense railway network until the middle of the 20th century, which was suppressed by the development of road traffic. Digitization has been recognized as a method to improve accessibility and make more active use of railway heritage knowledge. The topic of the project is a specific line, a narrow-gauge line, which stretched between Jimbilia (Romania) and Veliki Beckerek, today’s Zrenjanin.

Within the project, a multidisciplinary team of researchers creates a virtual (historical) route using digital technologies to popularize the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Banat narrow railway.

Preserved and demolished railway stations and other buildings of the former railway are digitally presented on the online platform. The virtual route includes the following settlements: Zombolj, Radojevo, Srpska (Germany) Crnja, Nova Crnja, Aleksandrovo, Banatsko Karadjordjevo, Banatski Dvor, Zitiste, Ravni Topolovac, Klek, Zrenjanin.

With this digital product visitors have the opportunity to virtually travel on this historic railway line, which gives them a specific experience.
